“Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice,” wrote the poet Robert Frost.
Connells Maple Lee’s name-the-arrangement contest ended in “Fire and Ice.”
That is the winning name, submitted in separate entries by Rita Beck of Columbus and by Linda Sivinski of Powell. Each of them will receive one of the arrangements after it debuts on Dec. 5.
The arrangement, which will be offered year-round, comes in a clear glass cube. It features three types of greens; red flowers comprising one-dozen roses, alstroemeria and hypericum; and white flowers comprising hydrangea, veronica and stock.
The contest generated 71 entries in all.

‘Bouquets for Books’ collects 80 new children’s titles for Bexley Public Library and Delaware County District Library

Thanks to the community’s generosity, our 2015 children’s book drive – “Bouquets for Books” – collected 80 new titles for Bexley Public Library and Delaware County District Library.
Anyone who donated a new children’s book during the event, which ran Oct 31-Nov. 7, was eligible to receive a free bouquet, up to three per family per visit.

Connells Maple Lee to honor active military and veterans by collecting ‘Holiday Mail for Heroes’ Nov. 11-25 in all stores

Connells Maple Lee will collect cards and coloring pages for active military and veterans in each of its stores Nov. 11-25 as part of the American Red Cross’ “Holiday Mail for Heroes” program.
Collected cards and coloring pages will be handed over to the Red Cross, whose volunteers will organize them for delivery.
Cards may be dropped off at any of Connells Maple Lee’s three Columbus-area locations during normal business hours. Free coloring pages are available at the stores or can be downloaded here:
Christmas Tree
Ornament
Santa
Reindeer
Dreidel
The Red Cross offers these guidelines for preparing cards:

  • Use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member” as cards addressed to specific individuals cannot be delivered through this program.
Include messages of support and thanks.
  • Sign your name to them.
  • Don’t include letters or other personal information (photos, addresses).
  • Refrain from choosing cards with glitter.

The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

Connells Maple Lee will salute military veterans with free red, white and blue bouquets on Nov. 11.
Any veteran who stops by one of our three Columbus-area stores on Veterans Day will receive a bouquet.
“The men and women who have served in our military protected our freedoms every day, often in far-off places and always at great personal sacrifice,” said Greg Royer, president and CEO of Connells Maple Lee.
“This is our small way of recognizing and honoring their selfless service to our country.”

We’ve updated our ‘Power of Pink’ arrangement to continue breast cancer awareness efforts

Connells Maple Lee’s fall catalog will arrive in mailboxes just as October ushers in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The catalog includes a new version of our “Power of Pink” arrangement, which is offered year-round to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
The new arrangement features hydrangea and roses in a swirled glass vase and measures 12 inches high and 11 inches wide. It is priced at $56.99 and can be ordered online, over the phone or in-store.
With each arrangement sold, we earmark $10 for breast cancer organizations.
In 2015, that meant a $1,000 donation to the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).
In the United States, approximately 40,290 women are expected to die from breast cancer in 2015, according to breastcancer.org. However, death rates have been decreasing since 1989 as a result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.
