How to Make the Most of Your $9.99 Roses

Fresh roses are always a good idea, especially at $9.99. With a few simple techniques, you can elevate their look, extend their life, and create a stunning arrangement right at home.

Step 1: Gently unwrap your roses and remove the rubber bands

Step 2: Carefully remove the outer guard petals from each bloom

The outer petals, known as guard petals, protect the inner bloom during transport. They can often appear bruised, wrinkled, or discolored, so it’s best to remove them when you first bring your roses home. To do this, hold the stem just below the bud and place your thumb and index finger at the base of the outermost petal. Gently peel it away to reveal the fresh, beautiful petals underneath.

Step 3: Strip away the lower leaves from each stem

It’s important to remove any leaves that will sit below the waterline in your vase. Submerged leaves can rot, promote bacterial growth, and shorten the life of your flowers. It’s important to leave the upper leaves on. The leaves are the mechanism that draws the water through the stem. It also creates a more natural look.

Step 4: Remove any thorns along the stems (optional)

Removing thorns from your rose stems makes them easier and safer to handle while arranging. Use a pair of scissors to snip them off one by one, or a rose stripper if you have one to quickly remove both leaves and thorns. You can also use your fingers, but take care to avoid pricking yourself.

Step 5: Select your favorite vase

Choose your favorite vase to showcase your roses. Tall or wide styles both work beautifully, depending on the look you prefer. No vase? A mason jar makes a simple and charming alternative.

Step 6: Fill vase with fresh water and mix in the flower food

Use the entire flower food packet for a quart of water. If your vase holds less, simply use half the packet. Flower food packets are designed to help cut flowers stay fresh and vibrant for as long as possible. Flower food can significantly extend the lifespan of your roses and keep them looking their best for longer.

Step 7: Trim the stems to fit the height of your vase

Trim your roses to fit the height of your vase. Depending on the size of your stems and vase, you may need to cut just a little or quite a bit. Hold the stem at an angle when cutting to help the flower absorb water more easily and stay fresh longer.

Step 8: Arrange your roses to your liking

Arranging your roses is where you can get creative! Start by placing the largest or most prominent blooms in the center of your vase. Then, add the remaining roses around them, turning the vase as you go to ensure an even, balanced look from all sides. Don’t worry about perfection!

Once your roses are arranged, step back and enjoy the beauty you’ve created. By trimming the stems, removing thorns and leaves, and adding water and flower food, you’ve set your blooms up to last longer and look their best. Displayed on a table, desk, or windowsill, your fresh roses will brighten any space!
